Alt power-pop · Psychedelic art rock
MouthSounds blends quirky alternative power-pop with flashes of psychedelic art rock, dancehall groove and punk grit all tied together by sharp, strange and sometimes hilarious storytelling.
The lineup — Jane Allen Wilson (vocals), Matthew Levy (guitar, backing vocals), Mary Anne Barckhoff (bass), and Nathan Logan (drums, backing vocals) — crafts a sound that recalls the sunny energy of the Go-Go's, and the art-pop eccentricity of The B-52's and Talking Heads. But there's always a twist; whether it's a syncopated beat, a lyrical curveball, or a sudden punk detour, MouthSounds will keep you on your toes.
Their songs bounce from political allegory (American Gene), where puppet strings, ego, and rebellion intertwine in a takedown of the Republic; to urban satire (Gentrifried), a gritty anthem about resisting the gloss of gentrification. Then there's the tongue-in-cheek heartbreak anthem (You Blew It), packed with hilariously unromantic imagery: "Lie out on a bed of nails / chew a wad of tin foil / take a long icy cold shower / 'til your balls recoil." And Precarious shows their tender side, using surreal metaphors ("a snail crawling on a shard of glass") to capture the risk and wonder of unexpected love.
On stage, MouthSounds is an experience — part dance party, part art-rock theater, part indie rock revival. One moment they're locking into an irresistible groove, the next they're exploding into raw punk energy, then dropping into shimmering pop bliss. Every show is a celebration of the weird, the catchy, and the unexpected.
